Karva Chauth is kept on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi (Ashwin Krishna Chaturthi in the amanta calendar). Married women fast from sunrise until the Moon rises, worship Karva Mata, Gauri and Shiva in the evening, and break the fast after offering arghya to the Moon. करवा चौथ पर सुहागिनें सूर्योदय से चंद्रोदय तक निर्जला व्रत रखती हैं।

Moonrise is when the Moon clears a flat horizon. Behind buildings, hills or haze it is usually seen 5 to 15 minutes later.
How Karva Chauth is kept · व्रत विधि
- Sargi: before sunrise, eat the sargi given by the mother-in-law. सूर्योदय से पहले सरगी।
- Fast: no food or water (nirjala) from sunrise till moonrise; many keep a phalahar fast for health reasons.
- Evening puja: after sunset, worship Karva Mata, Gauri, Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya with a karva (clay pot) of water, and listen to the Karva Chauth katha.
- Moon: when the Moon rises, look at it through a sieve, offer arghya of water, then see your husband's face. चाँद को छलनी से देखकर अर्घ्य दें।
- Paran: the husband offers the first sip of water and bite of food to end the fast.
